How to Winterize Your Outdoor Kitchen

Maple Leaf Associates Inc. designs outdoor kitchens that are both beautiful and durable. Still, homeowners should protect their investment by winterizing them no matter the quality of craftsmanship, design, and equipment type. Since the Hudson Valley experiences below-freezing temperatures, this rule applies. In this post, we share tips and steps to winterize your outdoor kitchen.

Drains and Water Lines

One of the biggest threats to outdoor kitchens in cold water is freezing water lines. Therefore, it's essential to prevent this from occurring. To do so, turn off the water running to all outdoor appliances, such as sinks, iceboxes, coolers, and dishwashers.

Despite turning off the water, it still remains in the lines. For this reason, you'll want to drain the pipes. Otherwise, water freezes in cold temperatures and can cause damage. To drain the water lines, turn off the water valves and turn on the faucets. You can also pour antifreeze down the lines as an added measure of precaution.

Coolers, Freezers, and Sinks

Most people understand that any food or beverages stored in outdoor kitchens should be moved inside. The trick is not to forget about this step. Once you've removed everything, give coolers, freezers, and sinks a good cleaning. Cleaning these appliances removes any remaining dirt or food and makes life easier in the Spring. Finally, don't forget to unplug each of these items before you begin the cleaning process.

Grills and Appliances

While freezing water lines aren't an issue for grills, it's still a good idea to include them in the winterizing process. Besides, who wants grease and buildup sitting for months at a time over the winter? If you spend time winterizing your outdoor kitchen, you'll experience such relief when you go to reopen everything in the Spring and can start fresh.

First, use a degreaser to remove excess grease. Then, use stainless steel cleaner and polish on any stainless steel appliances. Next, turn off the gas line and close the hood vent. Finally, consider covering the area with a large tarp.

Storage and Components

Storage, cabinetry, and other outdoor kitchen components don't necessarily require winterization. However, we encourage you to perform an entire winterizing and deep clean at the end of each season. When it comes to cabinetry, this looks like spending intentional time wiping them down and cleaning them. If you have covers, use them. If not, clean and dry them, add a little lubricant to the hinges, and consider purchasing an after-market cover. This way, you'll unveil your outdoor hardscaping and kitchen in the Spring with glee, and you'll be able to get going right away.
