Aeration and Seeding

Overseeding & Aeration: What You Need to Know

Fall is the perfect time for overseeding and aeration of your lawn, as the cooler weather will help the grass to grow thicker and stronger. By adding more nutrients to the soil, you can help your lawn to sustain itself during the winter. Then, you’ll get to enjoy a bright, green lawn in the spring. But, there are some things you should be aware of before calling Maple Leaf Associates Inc. for this service. Keep reading to learn more.

You'll Need to Remove Summer Thatch

If you want your lawn to look its best, it's important to remove any summer thatch that has built up. Thatch is a layer of dead grass, stems, and roots that can form over time, preventing new grass from growing. By removing the thatch, you'll allow the new grass to take root and thrive. You can remove the thatch by raking or using a dethatcher machine. Be sure to remove all of the debris, as any leftovers will only continue to decay and create more problems for your lawn.

The Water Schedule Does Change

While you may have cut back on summer watering, you'll need to increase this schedule for overseeding and aeration. It's recommended that you water the new areas at least twice a day until the seeds take hold. Maintain this schedule until the new grass is about two inches tall. Of course, this is all depending on the weather and rain, so keep an eye on the sky because you don't want to drown your new grass either.

Overseeding Alone Isn't Enough

Overseeding your lawn won't be enough. After all the summer foot traffic, your lawn has some compacted soil that can only be broken up through aeration. This is why both of these services come together. It's also a good idea to apply a fall fertilizer to help give the new grass seed a jump start. Plus, the added nutrients will be soaked up by your entire lawn, stored during the winter, and then used up in the spring, giving you a lush, green landscape right after winter.
