Are deer causing chaos in your trees and shrubs? Perhaps they’re eating the leaves or even using the trunks as their antler posts. Either way, deer on your property can be a nuisance, especially when they get close to the house. However, you may not even realize what’s attracting them in the first place, and it may not be what you think. So, Maple Leaf Associates Inc. is helping you identify these three plants that attract deer to your property.
Chicory is a hardy, deep-rooted plant commonly found in open woodlands, fields, and roadsides. The fragile flowers range in color from pale blue to white and bloom from July to October. Each flower head consists of 20-40 ray florets that spread out like the petals of a sunflower. Chicory is a popular food source for deer because the leaves are rich in calcium, phosphorus, and potassium, while the flowers contain high levels of nectar. In addition, chicory provides an important source of winter forage for deer, as the plants remain green even when snow is on the ground.
If you want to add some color to your yard this season, you may consider planting pansies. But did you know that pansies are also one of the plants that attract deer? Deer love to munch on the brightly-colored flowers, and they will quickly decimate a pansy bed if given a chance. If you live in an area with a high deer population, it's best to avoid planting pansies in your garden. However, if you're determined to grow these lovely flowers, consider enclosing them in a wire fence or placing a net over the bed to keep the deer out.
Blueberries are a type of shrub that is native to North America. They are commonly found in woods and forests, and they are also grown commercially for their fruit. Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamins and antioxidants, and they can be eaten fresh or used in pies and jams. Deer love blueberries for their sweet taste and will destroy a blueberry bush in minutes. So, if you don't want deer in your yard, we recommend not planting a blueberry bush.
